The Heart of the Matter
Bible Text: Colossians 2:16-23 Matthew 7:21-23 | Preacher: Pastor Ken | Series: That They May Know…Christ
The Colossians and the church today both struggle with:
Pluralism believes there is a plurality or number of “gods.”
Syncretism the combination of different forms of belief or practice.
Ascetic (asceticism) severe self-discipline and avoidance of all forms of indulgence, typically for religious reasons.
What Christ has done…by His death and resurrection.
Qualified us, as believers, to be a partakers of the inheritance of the saints (1:12)
Delivered believers from the power of darkness and transferred us into the His own kingdom (1:13)
Redeemed us through His own blood (1:14)
Reconciled us, blameless, holy, above reproach (1:21-23)
Made us complete (2:10)
Circumcised us, as believers, from the old nature (2:11)
Buried us in baptism and raised us in faith (2:12)
Colossians 2:13-14 13And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.
Colossians 2:16-23 16So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ. 18Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, 19and not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God.
Matthew 5 – 7
Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount
It is all about the heart
Isaiah 53:5 The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.
Luke 22:19 And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
Luke 23:38 And an inscription also was written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew:
THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Matthew 7:21-23 21″Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
