Overcoming the Cave

Pastor:
Passage: Psalm 142:1-7
Service Type:

Bible Text: Psalm 142:1-7 | Preacher: Pastor Steve | Series: The TWO Caves of David
1 Samuel 19:8-18
The ONE we can ALWAYS count on is the LORD!
Hebrews 13:5 …the Lord will never fail you nor forsake youWhat are the people, things or behaviors that become the substitutes for the Lord?
1 Samuel 20:1-3 Then David fled…what have I done? What is my iniquity, and what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life? So Jonathan said to him, By no means! You shall not die! Indeed, my father will do nothing either great or small without first telling me. And why should my father hide this thing from me? It is not so! …But truly, as the Lord lives and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.
David Runs and Runs and Runs…
1 Samuel 21:1-15
The losses of David:
…his position (identity)
…his family support
…his mentor’s support
…his best friend’s support
…his institution’s support
…his self-respect
1 Samuel 22:1-2 David therefore departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. So when his brothers and all his father’s house heard it, they went down there to him. And everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him. So he became captain over them. And there were about four hundred men with him.
Psalm 142:1-7
142:3 My spirit was overwhelmed within me. …my spirit is silenced
142:4 Look to the right and see; for there is no one who regards me…no one cares for my soul
142:6 For I am brought very low…as if in a (emotional) valley
142:6b Deliver me from my persecutors, for they are too strong for me…David is defeated!
HE TALKED! HE PRAYED!
David deals with his life-situation by verbalizing his emotions
142:1 I cry aloud with my voice to the Lord. I make supplication with my voice to the Lord.
142:2 I pour out my complaint before him. I declare my trouble before Him.
142:3 When my spirit was overwhelmed within me You knew my path. In the way where I walk they have hidden a trap for me.
142:5 I cried out to you, 0 Lord. I said, You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.
142:7 Bring my soul out of prison that I may give thanks to Your name.
PICTURED IT!
David deals with his life-situation by visualizing his emotions
142:2 I pour out my complaint before him. I declare my trouble before him.
GOD KNOWS IT!
Understand that God already knows what is happening
142:3 When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, you knew my path.
Job 23:10…he knows the way that I take; when he has tried me, I shall come forth as gold…
Psalm 37:23 The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.
RECEIVE IT!
Receive God’s Provision
142:5 I cried out to You, 0 Lord; I said, You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.
Everything changes when we shift FROM focusing in on the problem TO focusing in on the LORD working in the PROBLEM.
…my refuge, my portion in the land of the living
There’s no living in the land of the living like living on the living God
SEE IT!
David deals with his life-situation by seeing his victory
142:7 Bring my soul out of prison so that I may give thanks for your name…the righteous will surround me, for You will deal bountifully with me.
You know what’s wrong with most of us?  We try to get to VERSE 7 without walking through VERSES 1-6; NO SHORT CUTS!
See it: The LORD will take care of me. I’ll be all right. He’s going to deal bountifully with me.
