Our Physical Health
Bible Text: 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 | Preacher: Pastor Steve | Series: Transformed Living
The physical and spiritual are tied together
3 John 1:2 Dear friend, I hope all is well with you and that you are as healthy in body as you are strong in spirit.
There are three key reasons why many believers in Jesus would not be able to do what God wants us to do:
We are trapped by overwhelming debt.
We are physically out of shape.
We are addicted.
God wants us to take care of our bodies.
The Word of God tells us that He lives in us and He works through us.
If we are physically unhealthy and if we lack energy, then God cannot fully use us.
Physical health is a spiritual discipline.
1 Corinthians 6:12-20 You say, I am allowed to do anything but not everything is good for you. And even though I am allowed to do anything, I must not become a slave to anything. You say, food was made for the stomach, and the stomach for food. (This is true, though someday God will do away with both of them.) But you can’t say that our bodies were made for sexual immorality. They were made for the Lord, and the Lord cares about our bodies. And God will raise us from the dead by his power, just as he raised our Lord from the dead.
Don’t you realize that your bodies are actually parts of Christ? Should a man take his body, which is part of Christ, and join it to a prostitute? Never! And don’t you realize that if a man joins himself to a prostitute, he becomes one body with her? For the Scriptures say, the two are united into one. But the person who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him.
Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body. Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.
The Bible teaches us that we must not be mastered by anything other than the Lord Jesus.
It is our choice to not let anything control our lives other than the Lord.
#1. Our Bodies are God’s PROPERTY!
Psalm 139:13-14 You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous how well I know it.
Everything God makes has divine purpose!
#2. God expects us to MANAGE our bodies.
1 Corinthians 6:12 I will not be mastered by anything.
We are the stewards of our bodies. We are accountable before the Lord in all that we have been given: time, talents, treasures, and our bodies.
We are responsible for ourselves!
1 Corinthians 3:13-15 But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person’s work has any value. If the work survives, that builder will receive a reward. But if the work is burned up, the builder will suffer great loss.
Are we living self-less or self-ish?
#3. Our bodies will be RESURRECTED after we die.
1 Corinthians 6:14 And God will raise us from the dead by his power, just as he raised our Lord from the dead.
In Heaven, we are going to receive a new body.
1 Corinthians 15:40-44 There are also bodies in the heavens and bodies on the earth. The glory of the heavenly bodies is different from the glory of the earthly bodies…Our earthly bodies are planted in the ground when we die, but they will be raised to live forever. Our bodies are buried in brokenness, but they will be raised in glory. They are buried in weakness, but they will be raised in strength…
#4. Our bodies are CONNECTED to the BODY OF CHRIST.
1 Corinthians 6:15 Don’t you realize that your bodies are actually parts of Christ? Should a man take his body, which is part of Christ, and join it to a prostitute? Never! And don’t you realize that if a man joins himself to a prostitute, he becomes one body with her? For the Scriptures say, The two are united into one. But the person who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him.
The Bible places high value on being healthy!
Our beauty is in WHO we are IN CHRIST!
We are beautiful because of the HOLY SPIRIT in us!

#5. The Holy Spirit LIVES IN our bodies.
1 Corinthians 6:19 Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God?
God lives in us! He has put His Holy Spirit inside us!
1 Corinthians 3:16-17 Don’t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you? God will destroy anyone who destroys this temple. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.
#6. Jesus PAID THE PRICE FOR OUR BODIES on the cross!
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.
Jesus didn’t just pay the price for our souls; He also paid the price for our bodies!
How can we best love our bodies?
Romans 12:1 And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.
John 5:3-9 One of the men lying there had been sick for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him and knew he had been ill for a long time, he asked him, would you like to get well? I can’t, sir, the sick man said, for I have no one to put me into the pool when the water bubbles up. Someone else always gets there ahead of me. Jesus told him, Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk! Instantly, the man was healed!
John 5:13-15 The man didn’t know, for Jesus had disappeared into the crowd. But afterward Jesus found him in the Temple and told him, Now you are well; so stop sinning, or something even worse may happen to you. Then the man went and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had healed him.
Do we REALLY want to get well?
