Living God’s Priorities
Bible Text: Exodus 20 / Matthew 5-7 | Preacher: Pastor Ken | Series: Transformed Living
Deuteronomy 5:1-3
Matthew 5:17-20 Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill…
Luke 22:20 Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.”
Exodus 20:2-17 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
Romans 6 5For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin… 23For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Exodus 20:3-17
3You shall have no other gods before Me.
4You shall not make for yourself a carved image …
7You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain…
8Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy…
12Honor your father and your mother…
13You shall not murder.
14You shall not commit adultery.
15You shall not steal.
16You shall not bear false witness …
17You shall not covet …
You shall have no other gods before Me…
Matthew 15:3-9 8″These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. 9And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.”
You shall not make for yourself a carved image …
We are to worship nothing with our time, talent, and treasure more than we worship God!
You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain…
Genuine respect is vital in any relationship!
As parents we have rules for our children. Why?
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy…
Worship and Rest are vital!
Neglect worship and your relationship with God will slowly bleed away becoming distant and lacking life.
Neglect rest and you are more likely to suffer anxiety and depression.
Honor your father and your mother…
Even if we struggle because some of the issues some of us have dealt with in our families we can honor the office/position. We can be thankful for the gift of life…
Remember the heart behind Matthew 15.
You shall not murder…
Matthew 5:21-24 21You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ 22But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment… 23Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
You shall not commit adultery…
Matthew 5:27-28 27You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
You shall not steal…
Matthew 6:24 24No one can serve two masters; You cannot serve God and mammon.
Proverbs 20:10 10Diverse weights and diverse measures, They are both alike, an abomination to the Lord.
Proverbs 20:23
You shall not bear false witness…
Proverbs 6:16-19
16These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: 17A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, 18A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, 19A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren.
You shall not covet …
James 4:1-5 Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? 2You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. 3You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. 4Adulterers and adulteresses! …
Matthew 7:24-29
24Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock…
26But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand…
28And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching, 29 for He taught them as one having authority…
You can go a long way to living out God’s priorities, as revealed in the 10 Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount, by asking yourself four questions:
Am I putting anything ahead of my relationship with God, based on the evidence of my behaviors/actions, not my intentions?
Am I making worship and rest a priority in my life daily/weekly?
Am I treating others with the respect outlined by God’s commandments?
Am I living contented or coveting?
