Jesus Changes Everything
Bible Text: Luke 5:1-11 | Preacher: Pastor Steve | Series: Abiding in the Lord
Luke 5:1-4 One day as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, great crowds pressed in on him to listen to the word of God. He noticed two empty boats at the water’s edge, for the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water. So he sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.
Luke 5:5 Master, Simon replied, we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.
GO DEEPER
When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.
Luke 5:6-9 And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord! For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken
Simon’s simple obedience to follow Jesus’ instruction brought blessing
Transformation
When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!
When we come to Jesus in worship, brokenness, and humility and in declaration of His glory and honor these are the abiding marks of the believing soul
WE ARE CHOSEN BY THE LORD
Deuteronomy 7:6-11 For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth…because the LORD loves you…Therefore know that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments… Therefore you shall keep the commandment, the statutes, and the judgments which I command you today, to observe them (1 Peter 2:9-10)
God has made the choice to choose, bless, save, direct our life, bring purpose into our lives and the determination of this is based upon our response to HIS invitation.
We offer ourselves to God
Romans 12:1 And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.
We offer our finances to help spread the Gospel
Philippians 4:18-19 At the moment I have all I need—and more! I am generously supplied with the gifts you sent me with Epaphroditus. They are a sweet-smelling sacrifice that is acceptable and pleasing to God. And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.
We offer our praise to God
Hebrews 13:15 Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.
We offer our service to others
Hebrews 13:16 But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.
We offer our love to God and others
Ephesians 5:1-2 Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.
The power that works in us is released through worship!
Ephesians 3:20-21 …who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us…
Learning to call upon him, worship him, pray to Him and we allow this to become a natural, normal functional part of our lives.
FROM Master Simon replied…TO Lord, please leave me…
FROM Master (teacher) TO Lord (supreme overseer)
Isaiah 6:5 Woe to me! I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty
Luke 5:11 Jesus replied to Simon, Don’t be afraid! From now on you’ll be fishing for people! And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus.
IF you will ABIDE IN ME THEN I will ABIDE IN YOU!
Following Jesus means acknowledging Him as Savior, leaving the past behind and abiding in Him today
and then committing your future to Him
