The Goat has Left the Building!
Bible Text: Hebrews 9 and 10; Leviticus 16:26-32 | Preacher: Pastor Steve | Series: Abiding in the Lord, Transformed
Passover
The Death and Resurrection of Jesus is what makes possible our deliverance
Yom Kippur
The Death and Resurrection of Jesus is the only sacrifice that can satisfy the righteousness of God
Atonement
Amends made for an injury or wrong; the reconciliation of God and human beings brought about by Jesus’ death and resurrection
Sin is offensive to God
Psalm 51:4-6 against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight…But you desire honesty from the heart, so you can teach me to be wise in my inmost being.
Psalm 51:12-14 Restore to me again the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you. Then I will teach your ways to sinners, and they will return to you. Forgive me for shedding blood, O God who saves; then I will joyfully sing of your forgiveness.
The High Priest represents the people before God
Leviticus 16:3-5
Leviticus 16:7-10 Then he must bring the two male goats and present them to the LORD at the entrance of the Tabernacle. He is to cast sacred lots to determine which goat will be sacrificed to the LORD and which one will be the scapegoat.
The goat chosen to be sacrificed to the LORD will be presented by Aaron as a sin offering. The goat chosen to be the scapegoat will be presented to the LORD alive. When it is sent away into the wilderness, it will make atonement for the people.
Abiding in the Truth
We are the ones that deserve death yet this animal will stand in our place by the grace and mercy and love of God
Leviticus 16:20-22 When Aaron has finished making atonement for the Most Holy Place, the Tabernacle, and the altar, he must bring the living goat forward. He is to lay both of his hands on the goat’s head and confess over it all the sins and rebellion of the Israelites. In this way, he will lay the people’s sins on the head of the goat; then he will send it out into the wilderness, led by a man chosen for this task. After the man sets it free in the wilderness, the goat will carry all the people’s sins upon itself into a desolate land.
Hebrews 10:1-5 The old system in the law of Moses was only a shadow of the things to come, not the reality of the good things Christ has done for us…Those yearly sacrifices reminded them of their sins year after year. For it is not possible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
Hebrews 10:11-14 Under the old covenant, the priest stands before the altar day after day, offering sacrifices that can never take away sins. But our High Priest offered himself to God as one sacrifice for sins, good for all time. Then he sat down at the place of highest honor at God’s right hand. There he waits until his enemies are humbled as a footstool under his feet. For by that one offering he perfected forever all those whom he is making holy.
When we are Abiding In Jesus we are made Holy
Our message to the world is: The Goat is Gone!
Mark 15:33-41 At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock. Then, at that time Jesus called out with a loud voice…My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? …Then Jesus uttered another loud cry and breathed his last.
And the curtain in the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. When the Roman officer who stood facing him saw how he had died, he exclaimed, truly, this was the Son of God!
