Hope: Power to Overcome

Pastor:
Passage: Romans 15:13, Colossians 1:27-28

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never fails. …

1 Corinthians 13:13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Biblical hope is the confident expectation of what God has promised and its strength is in His faithfulness.

Romans 8:24-25 For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.

Faith is the present possession of grace; hope is confidence in grace’s future accomplishment. – Jack Hayford

Hope helps us overcome life’s most difficult moments and to thrive in its many challenges.

Hope is key to our existence, to our ability to persevere and to achieve goals. Indeed, research shows hope is key to our physical and mental well-being and that it can promote healthy lifestyle behaviors. - Dr. Joanne Buzaglo, Ph.D.

How does hope develop?  Biblical hope rests on God’s promises.  For our hope to grow and develop we must know Father God, His words and His character.  God is the author of our hope.

Overcoming our past, our failures; breaking strongholds of past hurts, habits, and hang ups.

Colossians 1:21-23 And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled 22 in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight —  23 if indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard…

Romans 6:23  For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 5:1-2 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Overcoming our failures

Titus 2:11-14  For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.
